ABOUT 100 members of urban poor groups gathered at City Hall to seek the inclusion of barangay Luz captain Nida Cabrera and Alvin Dizon in the administration party's line up for councilors in the north district.

They handed a copy of the manifesto to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, containing about 10,000 signatures of residents, 20 barangay captains and homeowners associations, all in the north district, that endorsed both Cabrera and Dizon.

“Ten thousand signatures, murag lisod man ni balibaran, Tom da (this looks difficult to reject),” Vice Mayor Michael Rama told Osmeña in jest.

Rama and Osmeña met with the urban poor groups along with Rep. Raul del Mar of Cebu City north district and daughter Cutie del Mar.

Osmeña was happy to see the initiative of the north district constituents. “I personally like it. The more participation in the government by the people, the better the government.” said the mayor.

But he saidthe Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan would have to discuss the proposed entry of Dizon and Cabrera in their slate.

Rama said both names were in the list of possible candidates for councilors in the north district. The final list would be known during the filing of the certificate of candidacy, he added.

Dizon belongs to Akbayan and Kaabag Sugbo, an alliance of non-governmental organizations. He has been an NGO worker for 17 years.

Cabrera, 53, has been in public office for 14 years. She rose from barangay councilor to barangay captain of Barrio Luz.

Both Dizon and Cabrera have been working closely with the urban poor and various community organizations.

The two were happy with the mayor's positive response.

“I am greatly honored,” said Dizon who vowed that his and Cabrera's government serivce would be based on accountability and programs.
