Gov’t execs aim for higher spot in 2010 survey

First Posted 09:49:00 10/26/2009

CAPITOL and tourism officials yesterday said they were looking forward to improving the 7th ranking of Cebu as the best island destination in the world.

?That's great news. We have maintained the grading of our resorts, this will project a good image of Cebu and it is important because tourism is about image and perception,? Alburo told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

It is the third time that the Conde Nast survey ranked Cebu ranked as the seventh best island destination in the world.

Alburo said the ranking may level up if only the tourism law will be fast tracked and be well implemented.

?What we can do is to hurry up on our tourism law so that we can get more funding in advertisement (for the islands different destination)...and so we can continue our promotions,? Alburo said.

To improve the standing of the entire Cebu island in the search for the best places in the world, he said it is also important that private investors would invest more on tourism related businesses.

?We can also encourage private sectors to invest more (on tourism),? Alburo said.

Capitol Consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda said government agencies were working harder to bring the province as the top tourism destination in the whole world.

?We should be number one. Cebu has all the natural and human resources to compete with other localities. The problem is there are those who wanted to put us down,? Sepulveda told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

He said Cebuanos should be happy that the province was hailed as among the top tourism destinations in the world because tourism could bring a brighter future for everyone.

?This accolade goes to the Cebuanos. Excellence should not only be a dream, but should be our goal,? he said.

Sepulveda said developments in infrastructure and businesses would make Cebu as the top tourist destination in the world.

He said Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia has identified tourism as among her goals to uplift the lives of Cebuanos.

The growing tourism industry in the province, he said, would later improve the standards of living of Cebuanos.

But Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña brushed off the ranking saying that the city will soon have major high rise hotels in the next few years.

?That?s okay because we have many things in the pipeline including five major high rise hotels under construction in Cebu City and none in the province (of Cebu),? Osmeña said.

The city government is expecting investors to finish their hotel and condominium projects around the city which includes those in the South Road Properties (SRP).
