First Posted 11:45:00 09/24/2009

A man suffering from nervous breakdown was shot dead by police after he allegedly ran amok along S. Osmeña Road, North Reclamation Area, Cebu City shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

The bullet-ridden body of Samuel Dotillos, 57, was found at the corner of Cabahug Street and S. Osmeña Road.

The victim bore multiple gunshot wounds.

Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador Jr., chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said the incident was a legitimate police operation.

Comendador said it was a judgment call for the police to shoot Dotillos.

Comendador said patrol car was damaged during the incident, indicating that the man tried to attack the police.

Initial investigation conducted by the homicide section of the Cebu City police showed that Dotillos was holding a bolo when spotted by Tejero barangay tanods Rudy Tabasa, Arnold Garbo, Joel Destajo, and Frasco Escanilla walking along Cabahug Street.

The tanods alerted the Mabolo police.

PO1 Neol Melecio Melicario said he introduced himself when he spotted Dotillos.

Melicario said he told Dotillos to surrender. The policeman said Dotillos tried to attack forcing him to shoot the man in the foot.

Dotillos was still able to run.

Another mobile patrol car arrived and intercepted Dotillos.

The man, however, hacked the window glass of the police car.

It was then that Dotillos was shot by PO2 Leo Gallego and PO2 Ramos Goco.

Dotillos was dead when paramedic from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation arrived.

A bolo was found near the body of Dotillos.
