Despite being in the opposition, Tinago barangay Councilor Joel Garganera said he could not help but admire the administration’s new possible prospects for councilors in 2010.

Garganera said that among those in the shortlist of Bando Osmeña – Pundok Kauswagan (BO-PK), he was most impressed with barangay captains Nida Cabrera of Luz and Jose Marino Benedicto of Zapatera, Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7) information officer Jaybee Binghay-Carillo, and Alvin Dizon, who is associated with a non-government organization.

Garganera said Cabrera is efficient when it comes to environment projects. Benedicto, he added, was a good leader, as both of them are in the Cebu Jaycees.

He said Binghay-Carillo and Dizon are both idealistic and have good reputations.

Garganera said if these four would be elected, they could come up with new ideas for the city.

He said they should stand on their own and not become “robots” or “rubber stamps,” terms the opposition frequently uses to describe incumbent City Council members, all of whom belong to BO-PK, for allegedly being beholden to party leader Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

But Garganera said the opposition also has an impressive shortlist of possible “young” candidates for councilors.

For the city’s north district, possible opposition candidates include Garganera, Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal III, Sambag I barangay captain Jerry Guardo, former councilor Danilo Fernan, Kasambagan barangay councilor Byron Piramide and lawyer Raymond Garcia, the son of former Mayor Alvin Garcia who ran for vice mayor in the 2007 elections but lost to Vice Mayor Michael Rama.

For the south district, the opposition may field former Sangguniang Kabataan chairman Anthony Jones Luy, former Poblacion Pardo barangay captain Danilo Lim, Ron Duterte and basketball player Dondon Hontiveros.

The opposition may also field Lahug barangay captain Mary Ann delos Santos for the north district congressional seat, and Jonathan Guardo for the south district.

Garganera said nothing was final yet. The official slate would be known in two months, he said.
