A MONTH after waste segregation was introduced in Mandaue City, some barangays are still convincing residents to adopt new habits of waste disposal.

Warnings and flyers are being given but by next month, fines will be implemented for “strict” implementation following the June 5 closure of the Umapad dumpsite.

In barangay Cambaro, one of the heavily congested villages, there are two material recovery facilities MRF) to receive segregated trash for recycling or composting.

About 50 of the households in the barangay practice segregation.

Cambaro has about 10,000 residents and two major factories, the Nature Spring Waters and Cebu Global Tires Incorporated.

Cooperatives have been set up to buy scrap and other recyclables from residents and barangay collectors.

Cambara barangay captain Vicente Domasian said it would take six months to reach 100 percent waste segregation.

Next month, he said they target 70 percent compliance in households.

Cubacub barangay captain Edgar Bihag, on the other hand, said his village has identified a lot to be used for its MRF but still needs additional dump trucks to collect “segregated” trash.

He said less than half of the households sort their trash despite efforts of barangay officials to distribute fliers and hold pulong-pulong.

Bihag said garbage collectors are instructed not to collect mixed trash.

However, some residents wait for nightfall then go to neighboring barangays and dump their garbage by the roadside.
