CEBU City officials will meet with school and health officials to address the incidence of suspension of classes due to fears of a swine flu infection.
Councilor Gerardo Carillo said the meeting will be held in light of the recent suspension of classes by the Talamban National High School after 21 of its students fell ill.
“I won’t advise to suspend the classes unless half of the students in a class are affected,” Carillo said.
The students fell ill after performing in last Saturday's Largest Dance Class in the World event held at the Cebu City Sports Center.
School principal Victoria Japitana said the students came from three sections of the fourth year class.
Of that number, 14 of them had fever. All were excused from classes and told to rest at home, she added.
Japitana and Dr. Lorna Rances, Cebu City Division School Superintendent ruled out reports that the students were infected with the H1N1 virus.
They said the students likely suffered fatigue after days of practicing for the dance event.
During their final day of practice, Japitana said the students were hit by a heavy downpour after hours of practicing in warm weather.
She said a lot of them would head to the school before noon without eating lunch.
A medical team was sent to examine the students.
Rances said a random sampling of four students showed they tested negative for H1N1 virus.
Rances said the City Schools Division only has one doctor and 16 nurses and they have to coordinate with the City Health Office for additional assistance.
