The Cebu City Council has asked the City Engineering Office to submit a consolidated list of concerns that the various barangays raised about the city’s drainage masterplan.

During the council’s session yesterday, engineer Pedro Adonis Compendio, project manager of the drainage masterplan, told the councilors that engineers had put together all concerns about the drainage project into a single list.

“As far as plans are concerned, we already have the consolidated concerns of all the barangays. All soft copies and hard copies are complete. All that’s missing is the implementation,” Compendio said.

The council urged engineers to submit the list so that it could be ratified by the councilors.

Compendio was summoned before the council yesterday and briefed legislators on the status of the project, which was aimed to address the city’s flooding problems.

Councilor Arsenio Pacaña said he hoped that the project would start before the 2010 elections.

“It’s funny because the last time we talked about this, it was right before the (2007) elections. Now we’re discussing it again and it’s almost elections,” Pacaña said.

The status of the drainage plan was raised due to flooding caused by recent downpour.

Compendio said that without the drainage plan, the most immediate solution to avoid floods was to clean up creeks.

“But we can’t clean the creeks because there are a lot of informal settlers living along them,” Compendio said.

Compendio suggested relocating the settlers.

The council agreed to discuss Compendio’s suggestion along with the other concerns raised about the masterplan.

Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. suggested that that the council be given regular reports about developments on the drainage plan.

Councilor Edgardo Labella said city engineers should submit the masterplan by July 16.
