ABOUT P70 million for road repair will be released to the Cebu provincial government to fix roads in southern Cebu which was battered by waves and flooding during a storm early this year.
Repair will cover Natalio Bacalso Avenue, Boljoon to Santander, Santander-Barili-Toledo road and the Sambaoan to Alegria section.
A memorandum of agreement for the funds was signed yesterday by Gov. Gwen Garcia and Eng.Fernando Cruz, head of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 2nd engineering district.
Workers from the local governments will be hired for the road projects to be completed in 105 days.
The local implementation ?is like a dress rehearsal? said Garcia, referring to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?s May 12 promise to ?download? P350 million to the provincial government so it can execute part of the P1.6 billion Cebu North Coastal Road, a national project.
For the southern road repairs, Taheyo and Cemex donated 20,000 sacks of cement. The Capitol will submit monthly progress reports to the DPWH.
The road repair project is separate from the P350 million approved by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her May 12 Cebu visit to complete the road component of the P1.6 billion Cebu North Coastal Road (CNCRP).
A planned expansion from two to four lanes of the Tayud-Consolacion-Liloan road connects the Cansaga Bridge of the planned CNCRP which President Arroyo identified as a priority project.
The CNCRP is intended to cut travel time from Mandaue City to the northern Cebu town of Liloan, bypassing heavy traffic iin Mandaue and Consolacion.
DPWH Central Visayas director Josefino Rigor said appropriation for the Tayud road expansion is still ?unavailable? for now. /Reporter Doris C. Bongcac
