SOME private schools in Cebu decided to postpone classes in all levels owing to the confusion of their students over the recent decision by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to delay the opening to next week.

Lawyer Augusto Go, owner of the University of Cebu, chose to move the opening of classes in all levels next week not because of the A (H1N1) scare but because of confusion of the students on the Ched decision.

?The reason is that the children were all confused, whether they will attend or they will not attend. So to make it clear, we moved the opening of classes in all levels to June 15. Anyway, we will have enough school days,? Go said.

The Ched called on all schools nationwide to delay the opening of classes to next week to allow students who went abroad to go on self-quarantine.

At least two De La Salle students were recently tested positive for the virus.

Asked if he was not worried about the possibility of infection caused by the H1N1 virus in the school campus, Go said the school was implementing precautionary measures like basic hand washing.

He said all UC branches have medical staffs on hand to check on students who may have developed swine flu-type symptoms.

But Go said there are no foreign students in his school since most of the students come from lower and middle class families.

?We?re not worried about that. In fact, all our teachers and employees have been vaccinated against flu?, Go added.

Other schools that postponed the opening of classes in all levels include the University of San Carlos, University of the Visayas, University of Southern Philippines, Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology and Colegio de la Imaculada Concepion.

Dr. Susana Madarieta, regional director of the Department of Health (DOH 7), said private elementary and secondary schools can decide on their own whether or not to postpone their classes.

She reiterated their office did not recommend postponement of classes

Madarieta said Region 7 is still under alert response level 2 which meant there's no confirmed swine flu virus case in schools and no community transmission.

She said all four confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Central Visayas were already cleared.

A 42-year-old woman who contracted the virus in a Zambales wedding was cleared last week while the fourth case in Bohol was also cleared last Sunday based on laboratory results of their swab samples.

Central Visayas still has 20 pending cases or cases under observation.

These pending CUOs voluntarily went to the hospitals on Saturday and Sunday because of their history of travel abroad and after they developed flu-like symptoms.

Madarieta said increased public awareness is the reason why the region has recorded a total of 61 CUOs since the start of their monitoring.
