Private motorists and operators of public utility vehicles yesterday objected to the proposal by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to raise the fee for the Motor Vehicle Inspection System (MVIS).
At present, owners of vehicles that undergo the MVIS as a requirement for the renewal of vehicle registration have to pay P90 for vehicles with four wheels or P60 for motorcycles.
The DOTC wants to raise the fee to P300 for four-wheeled vehicles and P150 for motorcycles.
During a public hearing yesterday, Glen Batiancila, manager of Tiger Taxi, said the proposed increase was excessive.
?It?s for road safety, so it?s okay (to pay a fee), but they should cut the increase a little bit,? said Batiancila.
Public utility vehicle operators are already hit by the economic recession, Batiancila said.
?The transport sector is having difficulties. The DOTC should prioritize the needs of the transport sector instead of implementing schemes like this,? said Edward Geolin of the Nagkahiusang Drivers sa Sugbo.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Chairman Alberto Suansing said the increase was needed to help recover the cost of building and maintaining the MVIS facilities. In Cebu, the MVIS is in Mandaue City.
?After 10 years, all that equipment might already be destroyed,? Suansing said.
