For students in Cebu City, there’s no school on Monday, Jan. 19, a day after the Sinulog grand parade to give youth performers a well-deserved rest.

But its a regular work day for Cebu City Hall officials and employees.

This was decided by acting City Mayor Michael Rama , who said he couldn’t afford to declare a holiday after so many non-working days were logged last year.

Another holiday would just delay garbage collection and post-Sinulog street cleanups, and basic services, he said.

He left it to the Department of Education (DepEd) to decide the status for students, but it’s a long-standing practice for the department to declare a school holiday in Cebu CIty after the Sinulog.

A DepEd memorandum on this is forthcoming said education consultant Joy Augustus Young, who said he already discussed it with School Supt. Dr. Lorna Rances who agreed there will be fewer or no students available that day, especially from public shools.

Young said students can attend make up classes on the following Saturday. Correspondent Jully Venus Cuizon
