CEBU CITY, Philippines – An 80-year-old man suffered a heart attack and died while watching the live feed of the “Dream Match” between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar de la Hoya at the Lapu-Lapu City Gymnasium on Sunday.
Santos Pangatungan Sr. collapsed beside his son, Santos Jr., past noon as Pacquiao was pummeling De la Hoya in round 3 of their fight.
Paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf), whose office is just across the complex, tried to revive the victim before rushing him to the Mactan Doctors Hospital.
But Pangatungan Sr., who is from E. Osmeña Street in Lapu-Lapu, did not reach the hospital alive.
The police said what happened to Pangatungan was the only Pacquiao-related death reported on Sunday.
Lapu-Lapu City Police Chief Mariano Natuel said no crime was reported starting on Sunday morning and even after the Pacquiao fight.
He described the Lapu-Lapu streets as almost empty from 9 a.m. when the pre-match programs and undercard fights were shown in satellite television.
Most boxing fans flocked to the Lapu-Lapu City gym and shelled out P200 to watch the Pacquiao match.
Less traffic was also noticed in most streets in Cebu City and most towns and cities of the province.
Mandaue City Police also reported no significant crime incidents during the fight.
The usually congested MC Briones highway in Mandaue was also almost left empty by noon when the actual Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight began.
But Mandaue police secured the Mandaue City Sports Complex where hundreds of people watched the bout live.
In Cebu City, less traffic accidents were reported because fewer vehicles were on the streets.
The Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) reported eight road accidents and only two with physical injuries from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the city on Sunday.
Jemelon Gemeno, Citom base control operator, said more than 10 road accidents usually happened on weekends.
But she said she noticed that the number of road accidents dropped whenever there was a Pacquiao fight.
“Mao man gyud ni ang dagan sa dalan kung mag boxing na si Pacquiao (This is the situation during Pacquiao fights),” Gemeno said.
Cebu City Police Chief Patrocinio Comendador Jr. said there was only one robbery incident in Barangay (village) Inayawan during the Pacquiao fight on Sunday.
In Danao City, the police were on heightened alert and secured the Danao Civic Center gymnasium in Barangay Poblacion where the fight was shown.
“Kalitan unya mi sulong sa atong kaatbang. Na-focus ra ba kasagaran sa away ni Pacquiao. Maayo nang way kompiyansa (Our enemies might attack and we're focused on the Pacquiao fight. It's better that we are prepared for them),” Senior Police Officer Deguilmo said.
In Toledo City, Senior Police Officer 1 Bernabe Ulan-Ulan admitted that most of their colleagues were watching the fight on pay-per-view and some on delayed telecast but they were still on alert.
In fact, Ulan-Ulan said they conducted a roving patrol in the City’s sports complex in Barangay Poblacion and other areas where most of the people were watching the fight.
In Talisay City, Senior Police Officer 3 Leofas Bonjoc said that most of the residents were at their homes watching the Pacquiao bout.
Talisay City police also reported no crime alarms during the fight. /Reporter Dale G. Israel with reports from Correspondents Chris A. Ligan, Jully Venus Cuizon and Justin A. K. Vestil
