CEBU CITY, Philippines - Torrential rains that hit Cebu City early Sunday morning caused landslides that resulted in the death of a 60-year-old tanod (security officer) in Barangay (village) Pit-os and affected a road widening project in Barangay Capitol site.

Loose soil caused a palm tree to fall and cut a wire from an electrical pole while Agustin Villaban was digging a canal in his backyard to divert rainwater from his house.

The wire fell near Villaban, electrocuting him, said Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CCDCC) member Edgar Lapina.

Lapina blamed illegal quarrying above Villaban's house for causing a landslide that loosened the soil in the area.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo urged local officials to cut overgrown trees, saying these may prove dangerous especially during rains and storms.

Meanwhile in Barangay Capitol Site, a landslide hit Escario and Juana Osmeña streets, disrupting a road-widening project there.

Carillo said CCDCC personnel and the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) placed barricades around the affected diggings to warn motorists.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a low pressure area (LPA) was reported 100 kilometers northeast of Borongan, eastern Samar.

Another low pressure area was estimated at 230 kilometers south of Puerto Princesa City.

Pagasa said southern Luzon and the Visayas will continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms spreading to eastern and western Visayas, including Palawan and Bicol region that may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and the Visayas with moderate to rough seas.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate blowing from the southeast to east and coastal waters will be slight to moderate except during thunderstorms. /Correspondent Justin AK Vestil
