CEBU CITY, Philippines - A private firm has offered its services to the Cebu City government to solve the stench at the Inayawan Sanitary landfill and increase the marketability of the South Road Properties (SRP), which is across the dumpsite.

Bethsada Bio'Solutions Corp. offered to eradicate the foul odor from the landfill on a “no cure, no pay basis” using a technology developed in Japan.

The firm plans to apply the Microbial Inoculation Technology at the open dumpsite by using a liquid culture of the latest generation of beneficial aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.

The liquid culture consists of photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and yeast, which makes it safe for humans because it is not chemically synthesized.

Candido Nadela, Bethsada president, said that covering the dumpsite with limestones or aggregates would not solve the stench.

The leachate or the contaminated liquid that is generated at the bottom of a landfill will seep underground and pollute the seawater and endanger the marine life.

The Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 strictly prohibits the dumping of leachate in the Philippine waters.

Spraying chemicals in the garbage would also kill soil nutrients in the area. The toxic residue of the chemicals would stay in the soil for decades and pollute the waters as well.

Bethsada's letter of intent was sent to the Cebu City government through acting Mayor Michael Rama on October 23.

The City Council referred the proposal to the committee on environment for proper action.

Bethsada undertook a program with Barangay Barrio Luz three months ago, converting tons of organic wastes into revenue-generating compost without using vermi-worms.

The firm hopes to partner with the city government in addressing the landfill problem./Reporter Marian Z. Codilla
