MANDAUE CITY, Philippines – An approved resolution to designate traffic enforcers in every skywalk in Mandaue City has yet to be acted on, much less considered, by the local traffic enforcement board.

Mandaue City Councilor Emiliano Rosal said the traffic enforcers would be tasked to persuade pedestrians to use the skywalk instead of crossing the streets to avoid accidents.

Rosal, who chairs the committee on transportation and communications, disagreed with the traffic enforcement board's proposal to place more concrete railings.

“It would not look good on Mandaue as foreigners would think we are undisciplined,” Rosal said.

He said based on data he gathered, there were 27 accidents that claimed the lives of pedestrians who did not use the skywalks.

Pedestrians who refused to use the skywalks reasoned that the structures were dirty and continued to house beggars and vagrants.

Residents near the Canduman crossing where a skywalk is being built likewise complained about the delays in completing the structure.

Meanwhile, the Mandaue traffic enforcement board informed the Mandaue City Council of their plans to regulate the loading and unloading of passengers near the crossing area at the Metro Mandaue.

According to the board, some portions will now prohibit public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers from picking up passengers.

There will also be designated areas for PUJ stops in the same area.
