CEBU CITY, Philippines – Residents of Sitio (district) Dakit in Barangay (village) Guadalupe, Cebu City, on Tuesday started dismantling their own homes a day after agreeing to relocate to Sapangdaku, a mountain village.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has assured the residents that the relocation site is suitable for habitation.

While some residents did not completely like the idea of being relocated, they have agreed to move, since they have no choice.

Landco Pacific Corp., whose Monterrazas de Cebu development was blamed for flooding in Sitio Dakit, gave P10,000 to each of the 12 families who will be relocated.

Since being evacuated late last month, residents of lowland areas of Sitio Dakit have been temporarily housed at the Guadalupe Sports Complex.

While some residents started dismantling their houses yesterday morning to prepare for the move to Barangay Sapangdaku, some, like 81-year-old Jesusa Cueva, said she was only willing to relocate to a higher area in Dakit.

Cueva said she did not want to leave because the place, where she has resided since the 1950s, meant a lot to her.

Cueva was the only resident allowed to stay in the danger area when the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council asked all residents in the flood-prone area to leave.

The city government declared lowland areas of Sitio Dakit as danger zones since these prone to floods during rains.

In April and last month, waters reached up to six feet, following strong downpours, partially submerging some houses.
