MANILA, Philippines -- The Bureau of Food and Drugs is expected to release this Wednesday its findings on the second batch of milk and milk products from China being tested for melamine contamination, a BFAD official said Monday.
BFAD Director Leticia Gutierrez said they were just waiting for clearance from Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
Last October 3, BFAD announced that two China milk products -- Greenfield Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink -- tested positive for melamine, an industrial chemical that causes kidney failure when ingested.
In China, at least four babies have died and at least 53,000 others have fallen ill due to widespread melamine contamination in milk products, prompting several countries to ban milk and milk-based products like candies and chocolates made in China.
