TALISAY CITY, Philippines - A man with a bolo (jungle knife) attacked the adopted son of Talisay Mayor Socrates Fernandez past 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Joavan Fernandez, 26, was hacked once in the chest in Barangay (village) Tangke, Talisay City but the injury was not serious enough to confine him in the Talisay district hospital, where he was treated, according to police.
The assailant, identified as Randy Basar, fled in the dark and is now the subject of a manhunt by police.
Senior Police Officer 4 Harrison Quinanola of the Talisay City Police Station said the incident appeared to be one of random violence (?paregla?) and that Basar had been in and out of jail for various offenses.
According to police, Joavan said it was the first time he had seen Basar and did not know what had provoked the attack.
Last week, Representative Eduardo Gullas appealed to Mayor Fernandez to send his son to a drug rehabilitation center to avoid further controversies over the young man's alleged abuses.
Gullas had warned that some people may try to get even and harm Joavan, whose brushes with the law, including a pending case of mauling two vulcanizing shop workers, have been well publicized.
?Na'ay mga tawo sa Talisay nga dili kaangwanta ni Joavan and they may take the law into their own hands,? said the congressman.
The mayor's son said he was in Sitio (district) Magay, Barangay Tangke on Tuesday night to visit Maria Macaraya, a fish vendor, to buy some fish.
On his way to the vendor's house, Joavan stopped by to talk to Nenita Amagos, a mango vendor, when the attack occurred.
Basar reportedly rushed toward him with a bolo in hand and struck the young man in the left upper abdomen.
Police said Basar had a criminal record and had been in and out of jail for stabbing incidents.
Cebu Daily News reached Mayor Fernandez at home but he declined to make any comment. /Correspondent Justin Vestil
