The regional police chief will detail two policemen to secure engineer Augusto Corro who was earlier declared by the court as the winner of the 2007 mayoralty race.
The court decision, however, is being contested by Mayor Sun Shimura and Vice Mayor Maria Luisa Loot.
Corro sought the help of Police Regional Chief Ronald Roderos on Monday after he claimed that an unidentified man was asking for his whereabouts.
Roderos granted Corro's request for a security detail.
Corro said he wanted to be cautious since inquiries about his whereabouts started after Bogo City Regional Trial Court Judge Antonio Marigomen ruled in favor of an election protest, which he filed.
The judge ruled that Corro and his vice mayoral candidate Jose de Leon won the May 2007 election.
De Leon said that while he has not received any direct threats on his security, it cannot be avoided that they and their supporters were anxious especially with the death of Goyong Arrogante, a candidate for councilor, in 2007.
Arrogante’s death was believed to be election-related. A suspect in the killing was already arrested.
Daanbantayan Vice Mayor Loot laughed at Corro's fear for his safety.
“If he feels that he is under threat then he should hire bodyguards. If everyone believes he is under threat and seeks police assistance, then there will be no policemen left in the town,” she said.
Loot said if there is any threat against Corro, it did not come from their camp.
Loot said her family is more important than politics and she and her husband, Col. Vic Loot, would not do anything that would tarnish their family’s reputation. With Correspondent Justin A.K. Vestil
