MANDAUE CITY, Philippines - The Banilad flyover and the proposed bridge in Barangay (village) Canduman, Mandaue City will not entirely solve the traffic problem in Governor Cuenco Avenue and in some parts of Mandaue City.

?Both of them (Canduman Bridge and the Banilad flyover) will compliment each other but the people should not expect too much,? said Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem.

He said that with both projects open to motorists, traffic will not be as heavy but there might still be congestion along those areas if roads in Barangay Talamban will not be widened.

Jakosalem, who sits in the Cebu City Traffic Operations and Management (Citom), was referring to areas in Governor Cuenco Avenue which belong to Talamban that are still narrow and can be considered as chokepoints especially with the presence of schools.

To make the traffic scheme perfect, there is a need to widen the Talamban stretch which according to Jakosalem will be a priority project of Representative Raul del Mar, Cebu City north district.

Del Mar said the Banilad flyover will not solve the traffic congestion in the entire Banilad-Talamban stretch but it will only solve the heavy congestion in the corner of Governor Cuenco Avenue and A.S. Fortuna Street in Banilad, Cebu City.

Del Mar said his next project will be to widen the road from the Mahiga Creek (near Country Mall in Banilad, Cebu City) to Cabancalan, Mandaue City.

But he said it would take about three years to implement it because they have to source out the funds.

?Road widening takes a lot of money. It has to be programmed and will be worked on installments like what we did with the Banilad flyover,? Del Mar said.

He said the problem on traffic will be solved after all the phases of the project will be done.

The Banilad flyover and the Canduman bridge are only components of these phases in solving the traffic congestion problem.

According to WTG Development and Construction Corp., the contractor, the Banilad flyover will be done in late September.

The P60-million Canduman bridge which is set to be built in the Sitio (district) Pilit, Barangay Cabancalan crossing over to Sitio Riverside in Barangay Canduman in Mandaue City, is expected to start construction in November.

According to Department of Public Works and Highways officials, it would likely be finished in six months.
