CEBU CITY, Philippines - While Cebu City’s dengue cases went down from 220 in July last year to 104 in July this year, some barangays (villages) were not covered by the mist-spraying campaign done by health personnel.

One of those not covered is Barangay Lahug, which has one of the highest numbers of dengue cases in Cebu City.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo said Lahug’s non-inclusion does not stem from the political conflict between Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Lahug barangay Chairperson Mary Ann delos Santos.

Lahug is not found in the list referred by Cebu City Hall to the City Health Department (CHD) based on the accomplishment report of CHD's Environmental and Sanitation Division.

Carillo said delos Santos told him they already finished their programs against dengue at their own level.

He also said the public elementary school of Barangay Lahug was also included in the school mist-spraying program of the city.

The CHD also conducted a mist spraying activity together with the University of the Philippines campus in Lahug on July 25.

The Cebu City Hall has conducted “pulong-pulong” (gathering) or barangay hall campaigns in at least 22 barangays classified as dengue “hotspots.”

Most barangays that were generally dengue-free are in the hinterland areas.

Barangay Pahina, San Nicholas is the only urban barangay in Cebu City that has zero cases of dengue.

Osmeña credited the “pulong-pulong” to the decline in Cebu City’s dengue cases.

The Cebu City Council called on the city’s barangays to submit their plans and programs against dengue so they can avail of assistance from City Hall.
