CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Carcar City police chief said he would appeal the decision of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 29, which set free on Saturday brothers Maximo and Concordio Laputan after dismissing a direct assault case filed against them.

Superintendent Teofilo Siclot said he was not aware that the case was dismissed because he was never informed by the RTC that the brothers had appealed the court's decision, which found them guilty and sentenced them to jail.

According to Siclot, the last information he had about the Laputans? case was that they were convicted by the Municipal Trial Court in Cities and were serving their jail terms.

Siclot said he still had to read the court's decision before making any move against the Laputan brothers.

The police chief claimed that they have strong evidence and witnesses on the direct assault case that the police filed against the Laputan brothers.

Siclot, however, said the police would no longer pursue the rape-slay case filed against the brothers after they were acquitted when someone came forward to own up to the crime.

Ronnie Tabura, a cousin of the brothers, tagged the Laputans as the ones who raped and killed Maximo's own 13-year-old daughter.

When they were about to be arrested, the Laputans chased the arresting officers with their bolos.

Tabura later admitted to the crime, which resulted to the acquittal of Maximo and Concordio from the rape-slay case.

But too poor to post bail, the Laputans were not able to fight back when the police filed a direct case of assault against them.

Even if the Laputan brothers were innocent, Siclot said they should not have attacked the policemen because they were just doing their job.
