CEBU CITY, Philippines – If you live near the Banawa public market in Barangay (village) Guadalupe or along the road towards the Guadalupe Church in Cebu City, get ready to take extra jeepney rides, walk that extra block, or drive through unusual roads next week.
The City Traffic Operations and Management (Citom) on Monday announced that private and public vehicles that normally take the intersection of V. Rama Avenue with M. Velez and R. Duterte streets while going to the Guadalupe Church will be rerouted into interior roads in an attempt to decongest traffic at the intersection.
The rerouting will be enforced for one week, said Citom executive director Arnel Tancinco, but only during the morning rush hours, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The rerouting will allow Citom to study how best to decongest traffic in the area.
Motorists coming from the Capitol, Banawa or Englis areas who want to go towards the Guadalupe church will have to take M. Velez Street and head into either A. Abellana or E. Osmeña streets, take a left on L. Bacayo street, then make a right on V. Rama before continuing towards the church.
During the time of the rerouting, the stretch of M. Velez between its intersections with L. Bacayo and M. Velez will become a one-way road, catering only to southbound traffic.
Citom enforcers and traffic signs will be deployed to guide traffic during the rerouting.
Meanwhile, Citom has declared the experimental rerouting of 04L jeepneys a failure after jeepney drivers failed to follow the new route suggested by the traffic office.
Tancinco said Citom has not bothered apprehending 04L drivers who have not followed the rerouting scheme because the scheme was implemented to give drivers a chance to understand how the rerouting could have given them an advantage. /With a report by Correspondent Chris A. Ligan
