MANDAUE CITY, Philippines - Residents of Maguikay village in Mandaue City may expect cheaper water rates in six months following a deal between barangay (village) officials and Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (MRI) last Thursday.
Under a contract signed between barangay Captain Elstone Dabon and MRI president Antonio Tompar, the company will install pipelines, water meters and other related facilities in the barangay.
?Water rates shall be charged one peso less than the charge by the Metro Cebu Water District in all its graduated scale rates excluding, the discounts or promotional sale of said MCWD,? the contract stated.
The agreement will ensure a five-percent share of MRI?s monthly profits for Barangay Maguikay. The barangay will also endorse in a resolution to the National Water Resources Bureau and other government agencies to allow MRI to extract groundwater for the barangay?s supply.
The contract witnessed by Mayor Jonas Cortes will also require the barangay not to grant endorsements to other water districts other than the MRI.
The six-month period will include securing written clearances from lot owners whose properties will be used as road-right-of-way from the pumping station to the transmission and distribution lines.
Payment of bills will be done at the barangay hall. Maguikay covers an area of around 1.2 million square meters and is bounded by the Butuanon River in the north and A. Bonifacio St. in the south.
Its Eastern area is delineated by the Maguikay-Tingub Road. The heavy traffic along M.L. Quezon St. passes through the barangay leading to Barangay Talamban in Cebu City.
