THE MANDAUE City Council has asked the police to conduct regular patrols in the city’s reclamation area amid reports of rampant, cheap prostitution.
The city passed a resolution citing the presence of “carton girls” at the reclamation. Carton girls were described as prostitutes who would serve their clients on flattened-out boxes in dark places.
The council wanted police “to eliminate the carton girls doing immoral and indecent activity at the reclamation area during nighttime.”
“It is the responsibility of our police officers... to oversee the city’s surroundings in particular,” the resolution read.
The city police had already been conducting patrols in the reclamation area, though not for any specific criminal activity.
Last March, police responded to an alarm of a man who patronized a carton girl, but ended up getting robbed of his possessions.
While the 36-year-old man was engaged in intercourse with the prostitute on a flattened cardboard box in a vacant lot along Ouano Avenue, robbers took his clothes undetected.
According to police records, the man and the prostitute rented the cardboard box from the Jade Court Motel, a few blocks from the lot, for P15.
He said that after spending a few minutes with the woman, he noticed that his clothes, which also contained P1,500 cash, had disappeared.
Naked, he approached PO2 Rogelio Travero and PO2 Roberto Peteros, who were patrolling nearby. The policemen searched the area and arrested Eric Manso, 26, and Faustino Tunacao, 27. The two found in possession of the man’s clothes. REPORTER DALE G. ISRAEL
