A total of 14 survivors of the MV Princess of the Stars have claimed a financial settlement from Sulpicion LInes Inc. (SLI).
Exactly what they received is handled on a “case to case basis” and the terms are not publicly disclosed.
Their compensation claims depend on the circumstance of their survival, said SLI lawyer Manuel Espina in Cebu.
The amount is lower than P200,000 but he could not give details.
“As of now, I am not ready to disclose the amount,” Espina told .
He said the survivors have to personally claim the amount and bring some documents to support their claim of being passengers of the capsized vessel.
In contrast, familiies of fatalities are aware they stand to receive P200,000 as insurance compensation from SLI.
At least 111 families have also each received P10,000 cash aid from Malacañang, said the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Operations in the Cebu City Sports Center began winding down as the action center turns into an 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. one-stop shop for processing claims and forensic examinations start next week.
Of the more than 800 passengers of the capsized MV Princess of the Stars only 32 were reported to have survived based on records of SLI and the Philippine Coast Guard.
Meanwhile the Public Attorney's Office (PAO) decided to pull out from the action center to resume their work load.
However, Regional Public Attorney Maria G-ree Calinawan said they still welcome requests for processing claims from the relatives of the victims.
She said their office could help prevent unscrupulous people from taking advantage of the situation.
But Calinawan said it's best for the victims to proceed to their office where the equipment and forms are available.
Elsewhere the Cebu provincial government and the city goverments of Cebu and Lapu-Lapu passed resolutions extending financial assistance to the families.
In Lapu-Lapu City Mark Bao, who heads the assistance desk for Lapulapu residents at Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) said the city government will also give P10,000 to the families who reside in their area.
Two survivors, Fel Gelig, an apprentice and an unidentified person are from Lapu-Lapu City.
Another survivor was identified as Oliver Amorin of Olango Island.
