To speed up the identification of cadavers, the Statistics Office (NSO) will process and authenticate birth and marriage certificates for free for the victims of the MV Princess of the Stars and their families.
Noel Rafols, NSO information officer, said this was an offshoot of the request of the Cebu city government.
The documents are needed for claiming the human remains and filing money claims for the P200,000 insurance compensation to be paid by Sulpicio Lines to legal heirs of each victim.
About 296 claimants were listed as having submitted documents for the release of P200,000 in compensation from Sulpicio Lines Inc. since Monday.
Rafols said the families who already paid for the birth and marriage certificates can get part of the amount refunded.
Rafols said they would try to shorten the processing time to less than one week.
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) also offered legal assistance to the families housed at the Cebu City Sports Center. /Correspondent Chito Aragon and Reporter Nilda l. Gallo
