CEBU CITY, Philippines ? Public school teachers may have shouted for joy after learning that they now only have to spend six hours actually teaching and spend two hours of school preparations in the comfort of their homes.
But not teachers in Cebu City.
Dr. Lorna Rances, Cebu city schools division superintendent, said her office would not implement the memorandum because teachers should stay in school for at least eight hours because of other programs and preparations.
Rances cited teachers should at least clean their rooms and prepare their lessons in school, as well as attend activities such as flag raising and flag retreat.
Joy Augustus Young, City Hall consultant on education, shared Rances? sentiments. He said teachers could not start classes immediately because they would have to make sure the room is clean and everything is ready.
?Teachers cannot just come to class and start teaching right upon arrival. Then they would no longer have flag ceremonies and if the classroom is dirty, they would just leave it alone and not even wipe it,? Young said.
Unlike in Manila where classes are held in three shifts, Rances said classes in Cebu City are mostly whole day classes, which require only one shift. Most city schools don?t have janitors to clean school surroundings and classrooms.
But Rances and Young assured that teachers will still only teach for six hours, despite spending eight hours in school.
