LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines - Businessman Efrain Pelaez Jr., president of the Mactan Island Chamber of Commerce and Industry, yesterday condemned the murder of lawyer Richard Sison, who is the lawyer and spokesman of Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza.
Pelaez has filed several cases against Radaza including damages for the demolition of Pelaez's causeway in Lapu-Lapu City and a graft complaint for the alleged computer scam.
?We, the chamber, condemn the violence even though he (Sison) was representing Radaza ? our opponent in most of the cases. We have sent our regrets to the family,? Pelaez said.
He said that those who filed cases against Radaza, including him, have nothing to gain with the death of his counsel.
The court battle would continue because Radaza could get another lawyer at anytime, according to Pelaez.
Pelaez said the murder of Sison could be described as a ?mafia-style killing? because the lawyer was privy to the inner workings of the Lapu-Lapu City administration.
?Maybe somebody was mad at him because of something he learned. He knows a lot of secrets in Lapu-Lapu,? the businessman said.
Pelaez said that police investigators should focus their investigation on who would gain most from the death of Sison.
Businessman Cris Saavedra, the main complainant in the lamppost overpricing case, which indicted Radaza, also conveyed his sympathies to the family.
He said he was shocked to learn of the ambush of Radaza's lawyer.
