CEBU CITY, Philippines ? The City Council has placed portions of two barangays (villages) under a state of calamity to speed up relief and rehabilitation efforts after these were hit by fire last month.
The Council acted on the recommendation of the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CCDCC), placing Barangay (village) Sawang Calero and Sitio (district) Eyha, Englis, in Barangay Guadalupe under a state of calamity.
Doing so would pave the way for the release of the calamity funds, the City Council said.
Some 50 houses were razed on April 14 when fire broke out in Barangay Sawang Calero.
Ten days later, another fire hit Sitio Eyha on April 24 and gutted at least eight houses.
Fire investigators estimated the damage of the two fires at P2.2 million.
In his resolution, Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo said the two separate fires could still classify as a ?state of extreme distress or misfortune or loss or misery caused by natural or manmade disasters.?
Cebu City Fire Marshal Ismael Codilla in his letter to the CCDCC said the fire investigators are still conducting further investigation to determine what caused the fire. /Correspondent Marian Z. Codilla
