THE MANDAUE City government is opening its doors to more than 2,000 young city residents who would like to have summer jobs.
The program is a yearly tradition of the city government to keep the youth productive while taking a break from school.
Residents of Mandaue City aged 14 to 18 are qualified to join the program.
This time, however, Mayor Jonas Cortes said he would make sure that the program would not be used as an accommodation for political supporters.
Cortes said that in the past, city officials get to choose who among the youth would be able to avail of the program. This time, barangay officials would make the selection.
The mayor said it was important for students to keep busy so that they would not involve themselves in vices.
?It?s a lot better because they can earn an allowance too,? said the mayor.
Each youngster who gets involved in the program earns around P75 a day.
Participants would be divided into groups that would be assigned to work at least 10 days each in barangay halls to help with certain programs.
The summer job program is scheduled to start after the city?s fiesta celebration next week.
Ernie Manatad, Cortes? secretary, said all paperwork for the program was ready and just needed the mayor?s approval.
The program was implemented during the term of former mayor Thadeo Ouano, and was led by former councilor Wenceslao Gakit, now a member of the Cebu Provincial Board.
