Internet service near Magellellan’s Cross by July

Cebu Daily News

A PUBLIC Internet connection will be available this July in the vicinity of Cebu City Hall and Magellan’s Cross. The codification of the city ordinances will also be ready by then.

The Internet service is intended for tourists and visitors.

Cebu City Councilor Roberto Cabarubias, chairman on the committee of information technology, said the wi-fi connection will boost the number of tourists in the Magellan’s Cross area.

Many tourists use wi-fi-ready cellular phones and laptops to email or their families and friends.

“This is a tourist destination and we have to attract more tourists in that area. But we have to secure the files of the city from the hackers so we have to apply for another connection,” said Cabarubias in Wednesday’s regular session.

Meanwhile, the codification of Cebu City ordinances, a long-running project, will be ready by July, Cabarubias reported.

This brings the city council closer to its goal of having a “paperless session” he said.

The codification was undertaken by students of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF). The work is being handed over to Cabarubias.

He said City Hall still has to study the output of the students to check if the data can be loaded in the computer system.

The project covers the electronic codification of city ordinances and resolutions from the approval of the first city ordinance in July 1945.

By using digital technology, the City Council aims to do away with reproducing hard copies of resolutions and ordinances. The data can then be accessed by the councilors on their laptops. Correspondent Marian Z. Codilla
