CEBU CITY, Philippines - Environment-conscious youth in Cebu City will troop to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) offices on Tuesday to register early for the 2010 elections.
They plan to boycott candidates who have made decisions that were adverse to the environment.
Vince Cinches, chairman of the Fisherfolk Development Center Inc. (Fidec) in Central Visayas, said the activity was aimed to mobilize the vote of the youth on such issues as climate change, off-shore oil and gas exploration, and environmental degradation.
It also is part of their activities celebrating Earth Day.
Among those who will converge at the Comelec offices about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday are members of the Save Tańon Strait Citizens Movement and Clean Air Youth Alliance.
Cinches said the participants will also sign a manifesto criticizing some legislators for supporting bills that have adversely affected the environment.
“Politicians, who supported coal mine operations, would no longer get a vote from the youth,” Cinches said.
Cinches urged Comelec to prepare forms for the registrants.
He said he had heard that Comelec may not have voter’s registration forms available.
Still, he added the participants would insist on their right to register, Cinches said.
