CEBU CITY, Philippines - Cebu City officials, led by Mayor Tomas Osmeña and members of the City Council, left for Manila yesterday to help Vice Mayor Michael Rama campaign for the presidency of the Vice Mayors League of the Philippines (VMLP).

Rama, who is on his third term as vice mayor, is eyeing the top VMLP post again after two unsuccessful attempts.

Nenita Fernandez, Rama?s staff who heads his press relations team in Cebu, believes that Rama has the backing of all Cebuano vice mayors, as they recognize the quality of leadership that Rama has been offering.

?It would be an honor for the Visayans and Mindanaoans if he will be elected,? Fernandez said.

Cebu City Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem said Rama now has a bigger chance of winning in tomorrow?s election because of his years of experience as vice mayor.

?It?s good for the image of the city and Cebu will be given more focus in terms of good governance,? Jakosalem said.

He, however, clarified that the cancellation of yesterday?s scheduled regular session of the City Council is not because the councilors were out to campaign for Rama.

The City Council meets four Wednesdays every month but the month of April has five Wednesdays, so the council decided not to have a session this week, Jakosalem explained.

But even as most of the councilors will be in Manila for three days, the councilor said their presence will still be felt in Cebu through mobile phones and the Internet.

?We can run the city even while we are away, although we could not be there to sign documents,? Jakosalem said.
