CEBU CITY, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said the city government would allocate funds for the development of the Cebu City Zoo if private investor Robert Yupangco backs out on their earlier agreement due to the Capitol’s threat to sue the investor.
Osmeña said the city government is concerned they would have a hard time looking for someone with the expertise of Manila businessman Yupangco, who operates Zoobic Safari in Subic Free Port.
Osmeña refused to reveal Yupangco’s reaction on the provincial government’s threat, but he said it was just a form of intimidation because they don’t have basis on their threats.
He said the city government would manage the property while the private investor would be contracted to manage or develop the zoo.
Provincial legal officer Marino Martinquilla wrote Yupangco on March 19, warning him against investing in the project.
Martinquilla said the Cebu provincial government would take legal action against the city government and Yupangco if they insist on developing the property which the province owns. /Correspondent Chris A. Ligan
