CEBU CITY, Philippines – The vice president of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Cebu Chapter was arrested for libel on Monday inside the radio station where he works for.

Carlo Duga-Duga, station manager of dyXR Aksyon Radyo, was arrested at 11:55 a.m. in Tangke, Talisay City after he was served a search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Douglas Marigomen of Branch 5.

Duga-Duga failed to post P70,000 bail recommended by the Talisay City Prosecutor's Office for the two counts of libel filed by Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez.

Senior Police Officer 2 Jaime Abatayo served the arrest warrant and brought Duga-Duga to the detention cell of the Talisay City police station. Duga-Duga was later transferred to the Talisay City Jail in Barangay (village) Maghaway.

Vice Governor Sanchez filed the case against Duga-Duga and former Compostela Mayor Gilbert Wagas last year after Wagas uttered in his radio program on March 31 and April 1, 2006 that Sanchez misled the public about the curative effects of his LactoPafi products.

Duga-Duga was indicted in the complaint as station manager for allegedly conniving with Wagas because he was not able to prevent Wagas, a blocktimer, from uttering the libelous remarks.

Records at the Talisay City Prosecutor's Office showed that Duga-Duga and Wagas failed to submit their counter-affidavit despite being given ample time.

Wagas posted bail last month when he sensed that an arrest warrant was already issued against him.

Leo Lastimosa, president of the KBP-Cebu chapter, said the KBP will help Duga-Duga with his bail through a surety bond.

He said through surety, the bond would cost only P14,000.

Lastimosa, station manager of DyAB Abante Bisaya and anchor of ABS-CBN TV Patrol, said the KBP would shell out P7,000 from the chapter's fund while officers and members of the KBP will also contribute to raise another P7,000 to come up with the P14,000 surety bond.

He said the KBP secretariat had prepared the money for Duga-Duga to post bail on Tuesday.
