THE CEBU City government will push for garbage segregation which includes recycling, reusing and composting garbage to minimize the garbage being dumped in the sanitary landfill in barangay Inayawan.
Engr. Dionesio Gualiza, chief of the Department of Public Services, said the sanitary landfill is close to overflowing.
Gualiza said if the barangays will continue to ignore the new solid waste segregation program, which calls on residents to group their waste into compostable, non-biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous and bulky, the life span of the sanitary landfill will be shortened.
Violators of the ordinance will pay a penalty of P500 to P1,000 or imprisonment upon the discretion of the court.
Gualiza said the landfill was reported to be only operational until 2006, but the city is trying to make it last longer by compacting the garbage and covering it with soil.
The city still hasn?t found a new sanitary landfill.
Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama said the concerned agencies of the city government will schedule a visit to the dumping site. Correspondent Chris A. Ligan
