TRICYCLE fares in Lapu-Lapu City are now P7, up by P1 since Saturday.
City Attorney Vincent Joseph Lim advised commuters to check if drivers have paid for the new matrix or a table of authorized fare rates, a requirement before they can impose the new fare.
Lim said he signed the matrix with blue ink to prevent unscrupulous drivers from photocopying the table.
He said if his signature appears in black ink, commuters should pay the old fare because the matrix is not legitimate.
Lim said the tricycle fare hike was long overdue. The City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the increase in 2006 but it was not implemented because of the rollback in gasoline prices in 2006.
The fare hike petition surfaced again when fuel prices rose in 2007.
The new rate is covered under Ordinance 376-2006 amended by Ordinance 411-2006.
Lim said the ordinance will benefit more than 3,000 registered tricycle drivers. Suzzane Salva-Alueta
