CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu City chapter has endorsed Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Gabriel Ingles as commissioner of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The IBP Cebu City chapter, headed by its president, Briccio Boholst, passed a resolution endorsing the Boholano judge.

They said Ingles would be an asset in the Comelec with his ?remarkable? performance as judge of RTC Branch 58 in Cebu City.

?He will help restore the people?s faith in the Commission,? said the resolution, which was passed two weeks ago.

Democrito Barcenas, former president of the IBP-Cebu City chapter who drafted the resolution, said there was a need for the Comelec whose image has been ?badly shattered? to be manned by a person with credibility and integrity.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo recently appointed former Supreme Court justice Jose R. Melo as Comelec chairman, replacing Benjamin Abalos who resigned from the post.

A civil society group also endorsed Ingles for the same post to President Arroyo.

Ingles, 58, said he was thankful for the endorsement but said it was highly unlikely he would be appointed.
