MANILA, Philippines -- A Filipino student, Andrew Wee, placed second in the International Logo Design Competition of World Olympiad for Urban Design (WOUD), the Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

In his report to the DFA home office, Philippine Ambassador to Tehran Aladin Villacorte said the competition, organized by International Art and Architecture Research Association (IAARA), with cooperation of Iran's Ministry of Interior Office of the Governor General of Fars Province and United Nations Human Settlements Program, was won by a Cypriot, Sani Karosoglu; the third place was given to Iran.

Villacorte said Wee's design was among the 208 submitted to IAARA; 165 of which were from Iran while 43 others were sent by other countries.

The logo design competition was held in preparation for the first World Olympiad for Urban Design event in Persepolis, Shiraz, Fars Province in 2009, said Villacorte.

Villacorte said the winning design would be the official logo for WOUD.

The competition was held April 8 but all the winners would be invited to attend the awarding ceremony in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts in Tehran on July 15.

WOUD 2009 event's objective is to enhance the quality of urban spaces in the cities of the world. The first gathering will be held in Iran but is intended as a sustainable program to be held every four years in one of the member countries of UN Habitat, said Villacorte.
