THE 19-year-old student who died after finishing the Energizer night run in Mandaue City last Saturday was in a state of delirium when he was brought to the hospital, where he ran through a glass door and jumped out a window.
An autopsy performed on Alexander Landera of Danao City stated the cause of death as ?traumatic injury to the upper extremity? in the report of medico-legal officer Nestor Satur.
The runner, a 2nd year college student in Cebu Technical University, suffered heavy loss of blood from a deep cut in his left arm when he rammed the glass door of the Mandaue District Hospital.
He was brought there for medical attention after some policemen noticed him unsteady on his feet after the race and about to collapse, according to a GMA-7 Balitang Bisdak report.
It was the student?s first time to enter a fun run, where he signed up for its longest segment, the 10-kilometer category.
Dr. Edwin Menguito, a psychiatrist, in an interview said hypoxia - lack of oxygen in the brain - may have caused the runner?s disorientation.
Hypoxia causes delirium, disorientation, agitation and violence.
Another possibiilty, hypoglycemia?lack of blood sugar due to too much exercise, was held unlikely since the patient showed hyperactivity, said the psychiatrist.
?He regained consciousness but he did not have enough oxygen in the brain,? Menguito told reporters.
The runner jumped out a low window of the hospital, which opens into a garden, but the distance was not enough to be fatal.
Dr. Oscar Quirante, the hospital's medical director agreed that the runner?s strange conduct was probably a result of hypoxia.
In a spot report, Quirante said that when Landera was left by ACERT paramedics on the pavement outside the hospital, the student had ?blank stares, deep eyes, cannot maintain eye contact? and kept mumbling ?Asa ang finish line (Where is the finish line)?" "Ngano ang mga pulis dili mutug-an asa ang finish line (Why wouldn't the police say where is the finish line)?? "Asa ang inyong mayor kay akong patyon? (Where is your mayor? I will kill him).?
Landera's vital signs were last taken at 11:26 p.m. Saturday. He was gasping for breath with barely any blood pressure. He died at dawn the next day. /with a report from CORRESPONDENT RIA MAE Y. BOOC
