There will be no water shortage despite drought.

This is the assurance of Supt. Nepomuceno Dangoy, chief directorial staff of Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Central Visayas in the wake of the public worry about the long drought brought on by the El Niño phenomenon.

The BFP assured that Central Visayas, particularly Cebu City, will not have problem with water supply.

Fire Prevention Month kicked off yesterday with a theme ?Sustaining prevention through active community participation.? Anmong the activities included a fun run participated in by 200 BFP personnel, followed by a Holy Mass.

A motorcade and a program followed.

Fire Prevention Month is celebrated every March because it is an onset of the dry season, which makes homes more vulnerable to fires.

During the media conference, Dangoy was also optimistic of the cooperation of the different fire stations across the region during fire emergencies.

In worse cases, Dangoy said they can always use water from the sea.

But he assured that water supply in Cebu island remains abundant.

In the meantime, Dangoy urged the public to help and cooperate in preventing fire.

He said fire awareness program and several fire drills would be conuducted this month in Central Visayas.

The BFP records showed that in 2009, some P110 million worth of property was destroyed by a fire in Metro Cebu, almost double to the P58 million in 2008.

In the Central Visayas, the damage caused by fire reached P145 million in 2009, a leap from 2008?s figures of P80 million.

Electrical misuse was the number one cause of fire in Central Visayas at 183 cases. This was followed by unattended stove at 127 cases.

Records showed that 122 fire cases in 2009 and 132 in 2008 were labeled as ?unkown cause? by BFP.

The BFP said these fire incidents could have been prevented if the fire department had enough fire trucks, a problem that should be addressed even in the city alone. Correspondent Chito O. Aragon
