The Lapu-Lapu City City has asked barangay Sta. Rosa on Olango Island to amend its ordinance that regulates the entry of minors in Internet cafes to conform with the existing city legislation.
The City Council returned the barangay ordinance because the time that minors were allowed to get inside the Internet cafes did not match with the city ordinance.
The barangay ordinance allowed minors to enter into Internet cafes from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. But in the city ordinance, the minors can get inside the Internet cafes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The barangay ordinance was sent to the City Council committee on laws chaired by City Councilor Florito Pozon for review. But the committee later recommended the disapproval of the ordinance since it contradicted with the city ordinance.
During their session last Wednesday, the City Council moved that the barangay ordinance be returned to Santa Rosa for possible amendments.
Barangay Santa Rosa approved the ordinance regulating entry of minors into Internet cafes because the parents had complained that their children were hooked to online games.
As a result, students and children would often come home late at night.
