Korean trader nabbed in Macau for Cebu killings

First Posted 08:43:00 11/20/2009

A Korean businessman was arrested in Macau as a suspect in the killing of two Korean men, whose bodies were found below a cliff in barangay Uling, Naga City, Cebu on Sunday.

Park Tae Fung is in the custody of the Hongkong police, said Chief Supt. Lani-O Nerez, chief of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).

Fung left Cebu for Macau last Nov. 16, a day after the bodies of Choi Ho Jun, 41, and Yang Soon Suk, 40, were found in Cebu.

Police said the three men were members of a big-time swindling syndicate in Korea and that Fung killed the men to stop a blackmail attempt.

Fung allegedly was pressured to pay money to avoid being exposed for his illegal activities in Korea.

A Cebu police task force coordinated with the Hongkong police after learning that Fung left Cebu last Nov. 16.

The two victims, who were found with gunshot and stab wounds, had earlier left the syndicate, said police.

Fung went into hiding in Cebu to elude arrest in Korea.

Police said Fung had a surplus car business in Talisay City, which has been operating for two years.

Authorities will look deeper into Fung?s business partner who left for Korea last Nov. 17. His name was not disclosed.

Nerez said money was the motive in the killing, and that Jun and Suk were killed after they threatened to blackmail Fung.

Police said the two Koreans threatened to report Fung to the authorities if he wouldn?t give them money.

The three men had agreed to meet last Saturday at the Asiatown I.T Park in barangay Lahug, Cebu City for the payoff.

Instead, Jun and Suk were found dead with gunshot and stab wounds a day after the meeting.

Task Force Korean was formed with operatives of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID), Crime Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, PNP Crime Laboratory, and Cebu Provincial Police Office and authorities from Korea.

Because of the violence, Nerez has requested for a list of Koreans staying in Cebu.

Nerez said the list would help police determine if the Korean visitors have pending cases in their home country.
