At least 20 houses were destroyed in a fire yesterday afternoon in barangay Carreta, Cebu City.

Investigators pegged the damage at P800,000.

But Bebie Lasola, owner of the gutted Y and B junk shop, said the damage in their shop would cost P2 million.

A forklift owned by the shop worth about P1 million was destroyed.

Cebu City Fire Marshall Ishmael Codilla said most of the razed houses were made of light materials.

Codilla said it was the eighth fire that hit Cebu City this year.

In the initial investigation, the fire started at the second floor of the two-story house owned by Raul Unabia.

No one was at home when the fire broke out at 4:33 p.m.

Investigators said an unplugged appliance may have caused the fire.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Carreta barangay captain Eduardo Lauron said fire victims would temporarily stay in a vacant lot along Z. Devera Street.

Tents will be put up as temporary shelters of the fire victims.

The fire was contained about 30 minutes after it was reported.
