DILG won’t charge Consolacion mayor

First Posted 06:53:00 11/07/2009

While the Department of Interior and Local Government in Central Visayas (DILG-7) will drop plans to sue Consolacion Mayor Alvin Gungob, it did leave him with one piece of advice.

“Ayaw ipatigbabaw ang personal interest, tan-awa ang kaayuhan sa tibuok lungsod, public service unta maoy unahon (Don't let personal interest prevail but rather consider the welfare of the municipality. Public service is a priority),” DILG-7 Director Pedro Noval said.

The same sentiments were aired by Senior Supt. Jesus Gaquing, police provincial chief, as he called on Mayor Gungob not to cut off the Consolacion precinct's power supply.

The mayor earlier said he restored electric power to the precinct to ensure that operations will not be disrupted.

Gungob said he wasn't pressured by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia or threatened by the DILG's plan to file a case against him.

The mayor cut off the power and phone lines of the Consolacion precinct following the transfer of two police officers to his security detail.

Gungob said he wanted to ventilate his disappointment to the PNP hierarchy on the transfer of the two police officers who face charges.

But Noval said Gungob's move smacks of self-interest.

He said the mayor can choose another police officer if he wanted to.

“Nganong kadto man gyud? Duna tingale siyay laing rason. Magduda na lang hinoon ta (Why only them? He may have his reasons. I cannot help but have doubts),” Noval said.

Noval said the DILG will not take action for now but warned that the mayor shouldn't do it again lest he face severe penalties.

He said it is the obligation of local government units (LGUs) to extend financial assistance and support to their police.

Noval also laughed off Gungob's claim that a threat to his life is tantamount to being a security threat to Consolacion town.

“Ambot asa ang iyang logic (I don't know where he got that logic), Noval said.

On the other hand, Gaquing said he is willing to talk things over with Gungob.

“Manghinaot ta nga di na usbon sa mayor (I hope that the mayor won't do this again) for the interest for public interest and public safety,” he said.
