A lot caretaker, who said he was falsely accused of mauling and robbing a man, was found dead inside the comfort room of Mandaue Police Station 5 in barangay Opao, where he was detained.
Armando Caballes, 31, of barangay Quiot, Cebu City, was found hanging by the neck at 10:35 a.m. One end of his sweatshirt was tied to his neck and the other end to an iron grill bar.
Police said barangay tanods arrested Caballes on Oct. 30 after he and his drinking companions, Danilo Sadora and Arlex Brian Bertulfo were accused of mauling and robbing Junmark Cabatuan of barangay Umapad.
Caballes, who is the lot caretaker of the Antiga property, denied the accusations.
His companion Sadora also told police that Caballes was not involved in the mauling.
Bertulfo, however, admitted he was one of those who attacked Cabatuan but he denied taking Cabatuan's necklace and cellphone.
“Nibawos lang among mga barkada kay giingon nga apil siya sa naggulata sa among mga kauban (Our group retaliated because he was part of a group that mauled our friends),” Bertulfo said.
Cabatuan filed a complaint of robbery with physical injuries at the Mandaue City Prosecutors Office against the three men.
Police said Cabatuan was considering retracting the complaint against Caballes after he was convinced that he was not among those who attacked him.
Initial investigation showed that Caballes complained of a bum stomach and went to the comfort room.
On his second trip to the toilet, policemen started getting be concerned after Caballes took a long time to return.
Police said they said they found him hanging inside the comfort room.
“Intention gyud niya magpakamatay kay gikoko iyang tiil aron lang mabitay siya (It was really his intention to kill himself because he bent his knees so his feet wouldn’t touch the floor),” said SPO1 Reynaldo Urot.
Caballes was brought to the Mandaue City Hospital where he was declared dead by attending physicians.
