New centcom chief

POLICE Regional Director Lani-O Nerez yesterday said he was optimistic that the Central Visayas would be more peaceful especially with the expected close coordination of the police and the new Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command (Centcom) commander.

Nerez said the new Centcom commander, Army Major Gen. Ralph Villanueva, who is a batchmate at the Philippine Military Academy, would enhance a closer coordination with the police and military in the Visayas.

Villanueva assumed as Centcom chief yesterday after the former Centcom chief, Lt. Gen. Isagani Cachuela retired.

Cachuela, who served as Centcom chief for five months, turned 56 yesterday, the mandatory age of retirement.

Villanueva, who is from Zambales, was the 17th commander of the the 7th Infantry Division based in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija. /Correspondent Chito O. Aragon

Brains Caught

THE man, who was identified as the alleged brains behind the robbery killing of a nursing student in Talisay City, was arrested yesterday in Lapu-Lapu City.

Police arrested Francisco Bacarisas, 27, also known as Junjun Abella of sitio Mangilan, barangay Jaclupan, Talisay City in sitio Camansi, barangay Pajo Lapu-Lapu City about 11 a.m. yesterday.

Bacarisas is facing robbery with homicide charges for the killing of Dennis Christopher Bago of Victoria Villaga, barangay Tabunok last June 21.

Bacarisas allegedly shot dead Bago after he refused to give Bacarisas his cell phone. Bago, a fourth year nursing student, was on his way home after buying chocolate from a nearby store when he was robbed by Bacarisas and his companions Jessie Largo and Jestil Antig.

Largo and Antig were later arrested. They pointed to Bacarisas as their leader. /Correspondent Fe Marie Dumaboc

Balamban shooting

POLICE are looking at a personal grudge as the motive in the killing of a father and son in sitio Riverside barangay Singsing, Balamban town on Sunday evening.

Cesario Herbito, 46, and Billy Joy Herbito was shot dead allegedly by their neighbor Achilles Bagat.

Investigation showed that Bagat entered the house of the Herbitos. Billy Joy who was having dinner with his sister at that time confronted Bagat. Both argued and later Bagat allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Billy Joy several times.

The gunshots woke up Herbito. When he saw his bloodied son, he chased Bagat but was instead shot in the head.
