Police raid tigbakay at Carreta, 2 hurt

First Posted 09:54:00 11/02/2009

TWO men were injured when Cebu City police raided a tigbakay (illegal cockfight) at the back of the Carreta cemetery, one of the biggest public cemeteries in Cebu City.

Alexander Curaratan, 42, of barangay Hipodromo, and Ernesto Villamor, of barangay Mabolo, were two of several men who scampered when police arrived around 1:50 p.m. yesterday, said SPO1 Vicente Espenido III of the Waterfront police.

The two men suffered fractured bones when they jumped to a 15-feet deep river.

Paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf) brought the two men to the Cebu City Medical Center.

Espenido said the purpose of the raid was to disperse the people in the tigbakay and not to arrest anyone.

Police said the raid was conducted after they received complaints that the noise coming from the tigbakay disturbed the people visiting their departed loved ones at the cemetery.

Curaratan dislocated his right ankle, while Villamor sustained a fractured toe.

Because of the injury, Villamor said he could not move anymore and stayed in the river for more than 30 minutes before he was rescued.

Rescuers used a ladder in pulling Villamor out of the river.

No one was arrested during the raid but police dismantled the railings used as cockpit.

A fighting cock with a gaff and a dead rooster were also seized.
