TWELVE big-time drug pushers operating in Central Visayas are now under surveillance.

Cebu City Rep. Antonio Cuenco said those big-time pushers were identified by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency although authorities refused to reveal their identities yet.

“There is now close coordination in the conduct of surveillance against these people,” Cuenco said.

Cuenco said the suppliers were now under surveillance by PDEA and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Cuenco made the announcement yesterday after a closed-door meeting with Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) chairman Vicente Sotto III, NBI regional director Medardo De Lemos, PDEA Regional Director Randy Pedrosa and local police officials.

Sotto said an inter-agency action task force of PDEA, NBI and the police will also be created for the region.

He said that while the drug situation in the country has improved, drug operators are becoming “fiercer” and have found other means to evade the law.

Sotto said statistics are being gathered which he will submit to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in March.

The DDB is also conducting a study to determine how nubain should be classified amid proposals to declare the prescription painkiller a prohibited drug.

“We are trying to be careful because there are also other uses of nubain,” said Sotto
